What is heli skiing?
Heli skiing is backcountry skiing or snowboarding accessed by helicopter instead of chairlifts. Each day, guests fly straight into untouched alpine bowls, glaciers, and old-growth forests for the ultimate powder experience.
How is heli skiing different from resort skiing?
Unlike resort skiing, heli skiing has no crowds, no lift lines, and no groomers. Every descent is fresh powder in natural terrain, guided by certified professionals.
Where are the lodges located?
There are several lodges in British Columbia with different logistics and travel details.

When is the best time to go heli skiing in BC?
Heli lodges in BC are open from December through April - depending on the operator.
January and February bring deep powder and cold, dry snow, while March and April offer longer days, milder temperatures, and excellent spring skiing.
What level of skier or snowboarder do I need to be?
Guests should be strong intermediate to expert skiers or snowboarders who are comfortable in powder, trees, and varied terrain. You don’t need to be an Olympian.
There are different lodges and programs which are suitable for different abilities.
Do I need to be super fit for heli skiing?
A good level of fitness is recommended - it will make all the difference!
Endurance and leg strength help maximise your enjoyment.
Does Heli Dreams charge a booking fee?
No - Heli Dreams offers the same pricing as going direct, no hidden conversion fees or unexpected surprises.
You can pay in AUD and speak to an expert locally, to help you compare packages and options.
Heli Dreams can also assist in booking international flights, pre or post stays, and resort hopping.
Can snowboarders go heli skiing?
Yes! Snowboarders are very welcome.
Is heli skiing safe?
Heli-skiing is an adventure sport that involves inherent risks, including those related to weather, snow conditions, and backcountry terrain. Safety is always the highest priority — guides are ACMG/IFMGA certified, lodges use modern avalanche safety equipment, and all guests receive safety training before skiing. While risks can never be eliminated, teams are trained to manage them to the highest industry standards.
What happens if the weather is bad?
Each lodge is a little different. If conditions prevent flying, guests enjoy lodge amenities, gourmet meals, and lodge activities (cross country skiing, snow-shoeing, or even archery).
Lodges may offer “down day” credits or rebooking options depending on circumstances.
Some lodges offer a Cat-Skiing backup, for the when the helicopters cannot fly.
What avalanche safety equipment is provided?
Guests are provided with a transceiver, airbag backpack, probe, and shovel.
Training on how to use this equipment is included before you ski.
What kind of terrain is available?
Wide-open bowls, glacier skiing, gladed tree runs, and even steep chutes and couloirs are available.
Do the lodges have Wi-Fi?
Yes, all. lodges have complimentary Wi-Fi.
How many people ski in a group?
Each lodge is a little different - you can ski in groups of 4-5 or up to 8-9, usually serviced by 1 or 2 helicopters.
Have a group of friends? You can opt for a private group, or even your own private heli.
Can families heli-ski?
Absolutely! We see a lot of families coming together for their annual ski trip.
It is strongly recommended that each family member is a strong intermediate level skier or above. You may also consider a private trip, so you can choose the terrain and pace your family wants!
What happens if I get tired or injured?
If you are feeling tired, please keep your guides updated. Guides can adjust the pace or fly you back to the lodge if needed. Safety is always the priority, and medical staff are available.
Can non-skiers join the trip?
Some operators offer non-skier spaces at their lodges, it may be subject to availability.

Do the lodges cater for dietary requirements?
Absolutely! Please let us know in advance if you have any food allergies, or if you follow a special diet and the chefs will work their magic.
How much does heli skiing cost?
Pricing varies by package and season.

How do I get to the heli-ski lodge?
Each package is a little different - but logistics are taken care of. Some packages include a chartered flight from Vancouver, or a helicopter ride or ground transfer from the airport.
We can share more information once you have narrowed down your lodge preference.
Do I need travel insurance for heli skiing?
Yes, we strongly recommend comprehensive travel insurance (trip cancellations, medical expenses, and evacuation) with adventure sports coverage.
How far in advance should I book?
Trips often sell out 12–18 months in advance, especially peak season dates.
Early booking guarantees your preferred week, with some lodges offering early booking bonuses.

Do I need to sign a liability waiver?
Yes, prior to confirming your reservation you will be required to agree to the Lodge’s Policies and Conditions as well as the terms of the Release of Liability, Waiver of Claims and Assumption of Risks Agreement (ROL), as well as a similar waiver to Heli Dreams. You will also be required to complete this same agreement in person when you arrive at the Lodge and prior to going skiing.
How many runs do you average per day?
Lodges can average 8-15 runs per day, depending on the weather and hours of daylight.
What makes heli skiing in BC Canada special?
British Columbia is the birthplace of heli-skiing. Its deep snowpack, varied terrain, and reliable winter storms create the best heli-skiing conditions in the world.
Do I need a visa to enter Canada?
Australians need to apply for an electronic travel authorisation (ETA) before they enter Canada, even for short term visits or tourism.
What is your cancellation policy?
Refunds are subject to the cancellation terms of the heli-ski operator, and cancellations must be made in writing.
Travel insurance is highly recommended in the event of unforeseen cancellations.
